Building Confidence: How to Move Forward When You Feel Stuck
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build. For many, the lack of confidence can feel like an invisible wall, stopping them from taking the next step in their life or business. But confidence isn’t about being fearless or perfect; it’s about trusting yourself enough to take action, even when doubts linger.
If you’ve been holding back because of a lack of confidence, this blog will guide you through practical steps to shift your mindset, build self-belief, and move forward with courage.
Why Do We Struggle with Confidence?
Confidence often falters when:
We compare ourselves to others.
We fear failure or rejection.
We hold onto limiting beliefs about our worth or abilities.
We lack clarity about what we truly want.
We are about to do something that feels unfamiliar
These struggles are normal, but they don’t have to define you. Confidence isn’t about eliminating doubt—it’s about learning to take action despite it. One of the best thing my coach ever told me was - Louise, make friend with self doubt.
The Foundation of Confidence
Journal - Think about what gives you confidence? When do you feel most confident and how did you get to that place of feeling confident?
Now think about what takes your confidence away, when do you feel the least confident?
Confidence grows when you:
Take Small, Aligned Actions: Confidence doesn’t come from thinking about doing something; it comes from doing it. Start small and build momentum.
Honor Your Unique Strengths: Everyone has something special to offer. Focus on what makes you unique rather than trying to fit into someone else’s mold.
Reframe Failure: Failure isn’t the opposite of success; it’s part of the journey. Each misstep teaches you something valuable.
Practice: Perhaps you need some practice doing what you do so you can feel more confident, ask friends or family to be your guinea pigs!
Practical Steps to Build Confidence
1. Dialogue With Your Inner Critic
We all have an inner voice that whispers doubts and insecurities. Start by noticing when your inner critic speaks up and questioning its validity. Ask yourself:
Is this thought true?
What evidence do I have to support or disprove it?
What would I say to a friend in this situation?
Replace harsh self-talk with empowering affirmations like:
“I am capable of learning and growing.”
“I trust myself to handle whatever comes my way.”
“I am enough, just as I am.”
2. Celebrate Small Wins
Confidence builds through positive reinforcement. Every time you take a step forward, no matter how small, celebrate it. Acknowledge your effort and progress.
Keep a “wins journal” where you jot down daily accomplishments, big or small. Over time, you’ll have a powerful reminder of how far you’ve come.
3. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Growth happens when you push beyond what feels safe. Start by identifying one small action that feels slightly uncomfortable but exciting.
For example:
If you fear public speaking, start by sharing your thoughts in a small meeting.
If you’re hesitant to promote your business, post about it on social media once this week.
Each step outside your comfort zone expands your capacity for confidence.
4. Focus on Your “Why”
Why do you want to move forward? Why do you do what you do? When you connect deeply with your purpose or goal, it becomes easier to overcome fear and self-doubt.
Write down your “why” and keep it visible. Let it remind you of what’s at stake and why it’s worth taking the leap.
5. Build a Support System
Surround yourself with people who believe in you and encourage your growth. Whether it’s a mentor, coach, or supportive friends, having a strong support system can make all the difference.
Seek out communities or groups where you can share your journey and learn from others who’ve been where you are.
Confidence in Action: A Simple Exercise
Take 10 minutes to try this confidence-boosting exercise:
Write Down a Goal: Choose one small goal you’ve been avoiding because of a lack of confidence.
Identify the Fear: What’s holding you back? Is it fear of failure, judgment, or not being good enough? It's ok to feel fear, we are human after all! When you lean to embrace the fear and do it anyway then you can begin to move forward.
Reframe the Fear: Replace the fear with a positive affirmation. For example, “I might fail” becomes “Every step I take teaches me something valuable.”
Take One Small Step: What’s one action you can take today to move closer to your goal? Do it, even if it feels uncomfortable.
Reflect: After completing the action, write down how it felt and what you learned.
Final Thoughts
Confidence isn’t about being fearless; we all feel fear, it’s about showing up, even when you feel uncertain. By acknowledging your inner critic, celebrating your wins, and taking small, consistent steps, you can build the confidence to move forward.
Remember, confidence is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Trust yourself, take action, and watch as you grow into the most confident version of yourself. You’ve got this!
